Setup for Opticon 2004 - Batch Scanner

Initial Setup for a PC

You will only need to do this part once per computer.

  1. Download the All-In-One PC Drivers from the Drivers section of this page. Run the installer you downloaded by double-clicking on it. Follow the prompts on your screen until the installation is completed.
All-In-One PC DriversUSB-to-serial drivers installer package for 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows XP (32-bit only), Vista 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. This package contains four drivers. The first and fourth drivers are for the Opticon cradles. The second driver is for the OPN200x scanners along with many other Opticon products. The third driver is an ATEN driver for a popular RS232 <-> USB-VCP adapter. You can choose any of the drivers to install on the first screen of the installer program. *Note: Opticon USB Drivers may not install or operate correctly if FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) is enabled on your host computer*1.615Download
  1. Next Download the OPN PC Companion Application (OPN200x) which is located in the Software section of the same web page.
  2. We recommend saving this to your Desktop to make accessing it fast and easy.
OPN PC Companion Application (OPN200x)The OPN2001 (and any OPN running its version of the OPN2001 emulator firmware) requires the use of a PC side application to communicate and receive the scanned barcode data. This is Opticon's free standard application. A free SDK is also available to customize this application.EGF3800F

  1. Run the installer in the zip file you downloaded.
  2. Plug the OPN-2004 into your computer. Windows will inform you that it has found new hardware, and that it is installing the drivers for that hardware.
  3. You will see the status indicator in the application window turn green.
  4. From the application window you can download barcodes, change settings, or view and set the date and time on the device.

Initial Setup for a Mac

In order to set up the OPN-2004 on the Mac, we will need to install the Mac Companion Application and configure the OPN-2004 to connect to the Mac.

  1. To install the Mac Companion Application, download the "Apple macOS Companion Application" under the Software section of this wiki.opticonusa page.
  2. Look for this and click the Download link
  3. We recommend saving this to your Desktop to make accessing it fast and easy.

  1. Open the resulting folder, and run the installer "Opticon OPN Demo Application.pkg." Follow the prompts until the installation is complete.
  2. Plug the OPN-2004 into the Mac. At this point the OPN-2004 should be recognized as a network interface.
  3. Start up the Apple macOS Companion Application using the Finder. It will automatically detect the OPN-2004.
  4. The connection can be confirmed by the green "Connected" text in the top right corner of the application.


The OPN-2004 and the Mac are now connected and working together.

Final setup of OPN Companion Application for use with Clixon

If you haven't done so yet, refer to the Initial Setup instructions above to get all the proper software installed and ready. This part of the guide assumes that you have already successfully setup your computer to communicate with the OPN-2004.

  1. First we do recommend scanning a barcode label.
  2. Then plug the OPN-2004 Scanner into your computer using the USB cable.
  3. Open the OPN-2001 PC Companion Application from your Desktop or wherever you chose to save it.
    1. You may have saved the application somewhere else when downloading, so go there and open it.
    2. On a Mac it might show as OPNDemo
Once the OPN Companion Application is open (see screenshot of the OPN2001 Companion Application properly set up below):
  1. The Status light should be Green.
  2. Now you will tick the box next to Save to File option.
  3. Very Important - Make sure that only the following Display section options are Selected:
    1. Time of Scan
    2. Date of Scan
  4. Then make sure the following from the Formatting Options section are selected:
    1. Text
    2. Comma
    3. 12 HR
    4. USA - MM/DD/YY
Setup should be complete and you can now use the scanner and upload scanned products to your Barcode.txt file then into Clixon.



Upload to Barcode.txt file with OPN Companion Application

  1. Start by plugging in the Scanner to your PC and then Ope the OPN Companion Application
  2. Now click the Get barcodes button at the top of the application.
    1. A message might pop up that says Communication error! - this might happen every time, don't worry just click OK.
    2. Then back in the application click the Open button in the Serial port section.
    3. Now click the Get barcodes button again.
    4. The scanned data should appear in the Barcode data window.
  3. Now the Barcode data will have also been added to the Barcode.txt file typically found in the OS (C:) Drive or Documents folder on your computer.
  4. We recommend changing the location of the Barcode.txt file.....this is how to do it:
    1. To change this, click on the ellipsis(...) button which is to the right of the Save to file Option.
    2. You can now choose where you would like the Barcodes file to be saved - We recommend saving this on your Desktop
    3. The file should be called Barcodes.txt or something similar.

Uploading to Clixon from Barcodes.txt file

Once you have signed into Clixon you can either Upload a Batch Scan file to Issue Products from Stock or to a Cart for Ordering.

Issue from Stock - Uploading scanned barcodes (products) to Reduce Inventory:

  1. Choose Inventory Management from the left menu

  2. Then choose the Upload Batch Scan option in the side menu.
  3. Now click on the icon or Upload link in the middle of the page.

  4. Locate the  Barcode.txt file and click the Open/Choose button.

  5. On the Upload Batch Scan page back in Clixon, you can review and then click the green Upload button.

  6. This will Issue the product(s) from stock and automatically direct you to the Issued Products page where you  can confirm the upload is accurate.

Ordering - Uploading scanned barcodes / products to a Cart for Ordering:

  1. Choose My Carts from the left menu or go to an Open Cart - either option will allow you to see an choose the Upload Batch Scan option.
    1. It depends if you want to Upload to Start a New Cart or Upload to an existing Cart.

  2. Now click on the icon or Upload link in the middle of the page.

  3. Now locate the Barcode.txt file and click the Open/Choose button.

  4. On the Upload Batch Scan page back in Clixon, you can review and then click the green Upload button.

  5. This will with Create a new Open Cart with all of the products you scanned or it would have added them to an existing Cart if you chose that option.
This MUST be done after EVERY UPLOAD to CLIXON

Clearing barcodes from Scanner and Barcode.txt file after Upload to Clixon is Complete

  1. Back on the OPN Companion Application you will click the Delete barcodes button.
  2. Then you must open the Barcode.txt file, which should be on your Desktop (or where ever you saved it).
    1. Double click the file to open it.
    2. Now select all of the data on the page and press return to delete it.
    3. Then choose the File menu and click Save.
  3. Now your Scanner and Barcode.txt file should now be cleared and ready for your next scan.

Tips about scanning and removing barcodes from the Opticon 2004

  1. Scanning barcodes with the big button or "trigger" will store barcodes on the scanner.
  2. While scanning with the small button or "function" will remove/delete barcodes from the scanner.
  3. When the OPN-2004 has a good scan, it will chime, the LED on the device will flash green, and the laser will turn off.
  4. When the OPN-2004 deletes a barcode, it will give a different chime than above, and it will flash an Orange LED when it has a good scan.
  5. Deleting the same barcode again when there are no more scans of it present will cause the OPN-2004 to chime for about a second. The LED will also flash red.
